Prepare the skin

You can use a wipe that cleanses and tones and then apply a good quality moisturiser that contains sunscreen. Always start by preparing the skin. Cleanse, tone and moisturise your face.

Primer

Wait a few minutes for the moisturiser to soak in, and then apply a skin primer. Primers retexturise the skin and make the foundation application smoother, helping it stay on for longer. They are available from most good cosmetic lines.

Veins and blood vessels

Strong red veins, usually found on the cheeks, chin and nose can be covered with a green concealer. Dab it on with your finger and blend it into the skin.

Age spots

Dab a concealer or foundation stick that matches your foundation onto the age spots with your fingers. Make sure you blend it into the skin. A concealer is better for darker age spots because it is thicker.

Foundation

Dampen the latex sponge slightly before you dip it into the foundation. Remove any excess water. This will prevent it from absorbing all of the foundation.
Shake the bottle. Put a little foundation onto the back of your hand.
Dab onto the forehead, nose, chin and cheeks before smoothing it in with even sweeping movements.

Under eye bags and dark circles

Use a light reflecting concealer pen to disguise under eye bags. Dot some onto each bag and blend with your finger, being careful not to drag the skin. Skin illumination/ liquid highlighter

Use your fingers to apply a liquid highlighter with light reflecting particles to your cheek bones and the bridge of your nose. Blend using your fingertips. This will bring a warm glow to the skin and give it a youthful radiance.

Cream blush

Julia recommends using a cream blush. Powder blush is not as suitable for older skin because it can leave the skin looking dry and less youthful.
TOP TIP: Smile and apply with your fingertips to the apples of your cheeks. Blend.

Set with powder

Load a large powder brush with some light reflecting powder. Tap it with your finger to remove any excess and then apply a light dusting over your whole face. This will help to 'fix' the foundation and make the skin appear more even. Avoid using powder if the skin feels very dry as it can make the skin look older.

Bronzing and shaping

Using a large round brush apply bronzer to the nose, neck & cheekbones. This will help to add shape to the face
