How To Empty Your Refrigerator Before Traveling

How To Empty Your Refrigerator Before Traveling

How To Empty Your Refrigerator Before Travelling: Don't risk coming home to a stinky refrigerator filled with mold and mildew. Let VideoJug show you some tips to properly empty your fridge before leaving on a trip.

You Will Need

  • Refrigerator
  • Old Newspapers
  • Charcoal Briquettes
  • Tape

Step 1:

Clean It Out

First, take out all of your perishable items. That includes fruits, vegetables, dairy products and meats. Now raise your fridge's internal temperature to 38 degrees Fahrenheit to save some bucks, while keeping your non-perishable food safe. I

In your freezer, you want to remove any fast melting foods, such as ice cream, then, turn the internal temperature to 5 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Your food will stay frozen at this temperature, while your refrigerator uses less energy. If you're only leaving for a few days, you can stop here - but if it's longer...

Step 2:

For The Long Haul

An average refrigerator uses 5 to 15 dollars worth of electricity each month, with older models using twice as much as new refrigerators or freezers. That use of energy affects the environment as well as your wallet. If you are leaving your home for more than a few weeks, or for the season, you'll want to turn it off completely.

Here's how to do it safely, and cleanly. Empty everything from your fridge. Re-fill it with crumpled newspapers and a bowl of charcoal briquettes. They'll keep mold and mildew out of your unused refrigerator while you're gone.

Step 3:

Unplug It

Unplug your refrigerator and tape the plug to the side of the fridge so it doesn't fall down to an unreachable area. With a built-in fridge, you may have to cut the power to the kitchen. When you return, simply plug in your refrigerator, empty out the newspaper and coal, and go grocery shopping!
