How To Fit A Sliding Bolt

How To Fit A Sliding Bolt

How To Fit A Sliding Bolt: Fit a Sliding Bolt: If you want a simple way to improve the security on your door, then follow these simple VideoJug steps showing you how to fit a sliding bolt to your door.

Step 1:

You will need…

  • 1 Slide bolt with screws
  • 1 Drill
  • 1 Screw head bit
  • safety goggles
  • 1 hammer
  • 1 Bevelled chisel
  • 1 Tape measure
  • 1 Pencil

Step 2:

Height

Choose a height for your sliding bolt.

Measure and mark this height in two places to ensure that the bolt is level.

Align the main body of the bolt with your pencil marks and mark the position of the screw holes.

Step 3:

Bolt

Select a drill bit that is narrower than the size of the screws and attach it to your drill.

Remember drill safety. Put on your safety goggles. Make sure that all loose items of clothing and hair are tucked away. Clear the area of any potential hazards and find a steady standing position.

Now drill a shallow hole on each of your screw hole pencil marks. These pilot holes will make it easier to drill in the screws.

Change the drill bit to a screw head bit. Hold the main body of the bolt over your pilot holes and drill into position.

Step 4:

Staple

Hold the staple against the door frame, level with the bolt. Draw around it with your pencil. Now you need to chisel out a shallow recess for the bolt holder.

Before you start chiselling, remember chisel safety. Make sure that you are wearing safety goggles and clear the area of potential hazards. Find a steady position and remember to watch your fingers when you do start chiselling.

Make a series of deep cuts along your pencil outline. Remove the wood. Check the fit of the bolt holder in the recess. Mark the position of the screw holes. Attach a narrow bit to the drill and drill some pilot holes. Then fit a screw head bit and drill the staple into the recess.

Step 5:

Test

Check that the bolt works smoothly.
