Certainly before you go out and play on the golf course it's much more imperative to practice your distance control. So therefore, you build up your feel for the speed of the greens that you're about to play.

A great exercise that we can do is to either putt to the edge of the green or put a golf club down and certainly putt from various different distances.

The thing about the stroke is that the rhythm won't change. The length of the stroke will change to suit the distance that you're about to putt to and with the length of the stroke trying to manage the putt into the same rhythm it will increase in speed, naturally. So here's a quick drill to help before you go out and play.

So here's a quick drill to help before you go out and play. I've got a club on the ground in front of me and I've got two balls here of different distances. A little practice stroke first of all to try and build up your feel for the shot you're about to play, okay? So that one I got dead weight and the ball made contact with the shaft of the club. Again, I got dead weight, enough that the ball made contact with the shaft of the club.

Speed Change

What you will have noticed is that the rhythm of these two strokes stayed the same. The length of the stroke changed which incorporated the change in speed suitable for that distance. It's a great drill and it eradicates 50% of the putts that you're going to play on the golf course. So therefore you're building up speed and all you have to worry about from there is getting the right direction.
