How do you leave a party early without offending the host or ruining the party spirit? We've spoken to etiquette expert Diana Mather to show you how to leave a party graciously.

Step 1:

Advance warning

If you know before the event that you will have to leave early, you should let your host know as soon as possible. Ideally you should mention it in your initial response to the invitation. If something unexpected happens on the day which means you will have to leave early, you should inform your host as soon as you arrive. Simply apologise and explain the situation - a good host will be forgiving and accommodating.

Step 2:

Say polite goodbyes

When the time comes to leave, you should aim to make your exit as quiet as possible. Don't make a big announcement as this may prompt others to think about leaving, thus drawing a premature end to the party. Say a few quiet goodbyes to your close friends or the people you've been speaking to, then go and find the host.

Thank the host

You should make sure you say goodbye to the host before you leave. Thank them, explaining that you enjoyed the party but that you have to leave. Try to find a particular aspect of the party that you liked and compliment them on it. Then make your exit swift and silent. Like a ninja.

Phone the next day

It's always polite to phone or write to say thank you afterwards, but especially if you have had to leave early. Don't go overboard, but thank the host once more and express an interest in what happened during the rest of the evening. This second thank you will cover your tracks and make you more likely to receive an invitation the next time.
