How To Remove Chewing Gum From Clothes

How To Remove Chewing Gum From ClothesRemove Chewing Gum from Clothes. If you have chewing gum stuck to your clothes, don't worry. Lady's maid Bea Knapp will show you how to get rid of it in no time.

Step 1:

You will need

  • some ice
  • 1 freezer bag
  • 1 knife
  • 1 toothbrush

Step 2:

Act fast

For best results, act fast. Letting the gum dry makes it much harder to get out later. Pull off as much as you can with your fingers.

Step 3:

Freeze

Hardening the gum by freezing stops it sinking deeper into the fabric.

If it is a bulky garment, put some ice in a freezer bag and place it on the gum for a couple of minutes until it hardens. Or, take a single ice cube and rub it directly onto the gum until it becomes brittle.

Step 4:

Scrape off the gum

Once the gum has hardened, try to scrape it off with a knife. You should be able to remove all of the gum in this way from tough fabrics like denim.

Step 5:

Delicate Fabrics

For more delicate materials, like wool, pull off as much as you can, then wrap the item in a plastic bag and place it in the freezer to harden the gum. This should only take a few minutes.
Or rub an ice cube over the gum as before to harden it.
When it is brittle enough, gently pull of as much as you can with your fingers. Be careful not to pull to hard or you may damage the fabric.

Step 6:

Scrub with a toothbrush

Finally, take an old toothbrush and gently scrub the area to remove any remaining traces of gum.
Bea has removed all the chewing gum from both garments using these methods, but if there is any left on yours, wash as you normally would.

I found a neat product called gum-out which got gum off my carpet really easily - you can buy it at www.chewing-gum-removal.com, it's an easy to use applicator which injects a special liquid and within half an hour the gum lifts straight off. Good luck!

I had just purchased a new pair of jeans and wore them out to a concert. I had gotten gum on the front of the pant leg. As they were very dark colored jeans, I worried about using other methods that might also lift the color out. The ice and my fingernail removed all traces without effecting color or damaging fabric. THANKS!!!

My daughter had a big smear of ground in chewing gum where she had sat on a bench covered in it. Froze it then tried WD 40, then neat washing up liquid. Dissolved instantly and the resulting goo scrapped off with finger nail easily, although was a bit worried as it ooked as if the colours in her dress were running. But it was fine, it must have been the clour WD 40 goes when it has dissolved gum!. Then washed as normal to get rid of the smell of WD40. Now good as new.

when i realized that my favorite garment had a wad of gum stuck to it, i found your site and gave it a whirl. i viewed the comments you had posted and decided to use ovewhelming force. first, i soaked they soiled area woth WD-40 and let it sit overnight. the next morning, i put it in the freezer for about 5 minutes and then pulled it out and gently scrapped as much of the gu off as i could using my fingernails. after that, i brought out a roll of industrial strength duct tape, and was able to get a little more "pulled off." lastly, i froze the gum spot with an ice cube and proceeded to scrape the fozen gum "chips" off little by little. i choose a kind of "ginza" knife that allowed me to scrape, at a perpendicular angle, most of the remaining chicle residue. two washes in hot water..........hung-dry of-course, and ... . the gum was gone! as this clothing item had special, sentimental value, i rejoiced in my triumph. TAKE THAT, YOU GUM!

I did carpet cleaning for 10 years. Went to school 5 weeks a year to learn new techniques and all the new chemicals, etc... Best thing I have ever found for gum on carpet, in hair, on clothes, etc... is good ole' WD40. It disolves the gum very quickly, and completely. Same with ink and marker. Spray it on, let it set a bit, and then the gum will just scrape off. When done, clean with some DAWN and HOT water to remove the excess oil. WD40 is very safe and won't hurt your fabrics. I have even used it on Silk. (be careful doing that..NO scrubbing!) - Greg

What if the clothing has been washed and dried and then the gum is discovered on the clothing? Any ideas?

Didn't work on gum which I had sat on in corduroy trousers in a movie theatre for 2 hrs. Gum was too deeply imbedded. Used one of those orange smelling things after I pulled off what I could. That worked.
