How To Reset A Fuse In A Circuit Breaker Unit

How To Reset A Fuse In A Circuit Breaker UnitReset a Fuse in a Circuit Breaker Unit. When the power goes off unexpectedly in one part of the house, our presenter locates and resets the circuit breaker.

MCB unit

A Miniature Circuit Breaker Unit is the modern equivalent of a fuse box. Instead of old removable style fuses, it has Miniature Circuit Breakers which are switches that can easily be reset rather than replaced, as in the case of a fuse.

If there is a power surge, faulty wiring, or a fault with an electrical appliance, the Miniature Circuit Breaker for that electrical circuit will trip, breaking the circuit and cutting off the power for that section of the electrics.

Step 1:

Locate the MCB unit

If the lights have gone down you may need a torch. Your MCB Unit is usually near your electricity meter. They are often higher than is easily reachable. If this is so, carefully set up a ladder.

Step 2:

Reset

Each switch in a MCB Unit relates to a certain section of the electrics. If one of the switches is pointing in a different direction to all of the others, push it back up to restore power to that circuit.

Excellent! I'd had a look in a DIY book and still felt unsure about what the problem was and how to solve it. Called my bro but he was too busy. Found this video clip and the problem was solved in about 2 minutes! Great!

When working an electrical fault go from one appliance at a time. Be very careful, if an appliance is at fault, i.e. cooker, emersion heater etc. Get proffesional help. NEVER try to work on a microwave as it stores an electrical charge in its capacitor etc. Remember electricity Kills! If your not 100% sure of what you are doing, seek help!

The switch can always be reset. If it keeps going off then you have could have a problem with something else. First step unplug all lights etc. on that circuit and reset it. If it still blows call an electrician because the breaker could be bad or there is a problem with the wiring. If not plug in the lights etc. one by one and turn them on until it blows to find the faulty light, appliance etc. Once you know what is bad it is your choice to get it fixed or buy a new one. Just don't use it as you could cause an electrical fire.

As an electrician ill give you some info. If the breaker was tripped by a surge (could happend from lightning or ar random times) than you simply reset the breaker. If you reset the breaker at any time and it continues to shut off than you have a problem in your electrical run ( wires/ connections/faulty appliance...) You should check to see if you or any one has added to or overloaded a circuit. An example would be plugging in multiple items. This will require more power, therefor using more power and in return could be using up too much power causing the breaker to trip. There are many reasons a breaker can trip but i have told you of the most common way. Glad i could help those who needed. Blaze on

This video does not explain what to do if the switch CANNOT be reset. For example, the lights have gone out but each time I push the switch back to the on position it pops back off with a kind of explosion.
