How To Shop Securely Online

How To Shop Securely OnlineThis film will help you shop securely online. It has been prepared following police and Home Office guidelines. Shopping online can be more risky than shopping in person, so you will need to take a few extra precautions.

Step 1:

Protect your computer

Make sure your computer has up-to-date anti-virus software and a firewall installed. Make sure that your browser is set to the highest level of security notification and monitoring: remember the safety options are not always activated by default. If you are using Windows on a PC, you can access security settings through the Control Panel. If you are using a Mac, security settings are controlled through the System Preferences folder.

Step 2:

Use secure sites

Only use websites you know or that have been recommended to you. If dealing with an individual seller get a land line phone number and postal address (not a post office box number). For more information about shopping on ebay see VideoJug's film about buying and selling on Ebay

Step 3:

Pad Lock

Consider only shopping at sites that display a locked padlock or unbroken key symbol in the bottom of your browser indicate that your details are protected with an extra layer of security.

Step 4:

Register for protection

Wherever possible, shop on sites that have Visa Verified or MasterCard SecureCode options. This extra layer of protection makes it more difficult for fraudsters to use you card. The first time you shop you register a password, and without this password you can't shop on these sites again.

Step 5:

Credit Card Fraud

You might want to look at Videojug 'How to prevent credit card fraud' for more information about card security.
Stick to these guidelines for peace of mind.

another thing to look for when shopping online, particularly when entering personal data is an "s" on the address bar as "https://" this means you are in a secure environment.
