How To Tie A Shelby Knot

How To Tie A Shelby KnotJohn Kaye Of The Overlords live (now recorded) shows you how to tie the American Half Knot. Yes, The Overlords wear suites !!! We Tie Ties!!! I just found out it's called the Shelby Knot. Does anyone know why?

Step 1:

The American Knot

Well, I just watched about 3 grueling minutes of how to tie a half-Windsor knot by the British. I want to show you all how us all American nuts do it.
This is the American knot. I don’t know what else to call it, it’s probably been invented by the British however I think we’ve improved upon it because we use nicer ties.

Step 2:

Preparing The Tie

Now what I want to tell you is this is a knot that’s going to be a lot simpler than a Windsor, half-Windsor. You take the seam, the inside seam, you’ll notice that it runs the entire length of the tie; and you put that over your neck. Either right-to-left or left-to-right depending on whether you’re right handed or left handed.

Step 3:

Set The Lengths

Then what you want to do is you want to make a length between your second and third button coming down on to the collar; that’s one, two three, between the third and forth.

Step 4:

Going Over

You put that short piece up on that button right there and then what you want to do is typically you’re going to go over this way and then under, but what we want to do is we take the short piece and go over the top of the long piece. Now all the time keeping the seams outwards.

Step 5:

Creating The Knot

Then what we want to do is instead of going up-under, we go over like so.
Then pull it through and you’ll see what happens is that inside seam on the long piece is now turned to the outside of the tie, and it’s creating the knot.

Step 6:

The Pull Down

And we come back through on the other side and as you pull it back up through, you’re not having to double it up like a half-Windsor knot. And you just slip it through like so and then when you pull it down, it’s going to create a perfect knot every time.
And you will notice that the short piece has still got the seam against the long pieces’ inside seam.

Step 7:

Done

And that’s how we do it in America. So, if you have any problems with this just play this video again and just know it that the British do it the long way, the wrong way. Actually it’s the right way for a half-Windsor knot but if you want the all American knot by the all American nut, you’ve just seen it on VideoJug. Thank you.

I've actually never seen this knot. I was in the US Navy and they taught us to tie our ties with a half-windsor or windsor. I've always prefered the full windsor as the half looks somewhat lopsided. This Shelby knot actually looks like a reverse or inside-out half windsor. While this may be easier for some of you, I'm one of those guys stuck on tradition so I'll keep doing it the full windsor "classy" way.

i had high expectations for this, but it disappoints. you can slip the narrow slide in the back of your tie to avoid showing anyone the seams, but comeon, it's like wearing your socks inside out. and no, americans do not tie a tie this way!

It's called a "Shelby Knot" in honor of WCCO TV News Anchor Don Shelby, who has tied this knot for decades

I mean the winner is supposed to creative. Not just by telling us how to eat or wear a shirt or even tie knot should win 1000 dollars.
