How To Use A Trangia Camping Stove

How To Use A Trangia Camping StoveLove the great outdoors? Then learn how to cook on this traditional stove. Use a trangia camping stove for all camping food needs!

Step 1:

You will need.

  • Your trangia stoves which comes in 8 pieces:
  • a frying pan
  • a handle
  • a kettle
  • a burner
  • a couple of pans
  • and the windshield that comes in two parts - the base and the top half.
  • The stove can be unpacked and repacked with ease - a bit like a Russian doll.
  • It uses Methylated Spirits as fuel. This can be carried around in a bottle, and is less bulky than a gas canister.
  • You'll also need some matches to light the meths inside the stove.

Step 2:

Safety precautions

Do not use stoves inside tents or confined spaces. The carbon monoxide fumes produced by camping stoves are harmful and tents are highly flammable.

Step 3:

Unpack the stove

Take the compacted stove apart piece by piece and lay it out on the grass. Remember how each piece fits together to make it easier when you pack it up again.

Step 4:

Wind Shield

The Trangia is fully storm proof - meaning that it won't go out in windy conditions.

The wind shield comes in two pieces. Firstly place the bottom part of the wind shield on the ground somewhere firm and flat. It has ventilation holes in the sides and a middle hole where the burner sits. Now put the top half of the windshield on. Inside there are metal supports. Pull these out as they support the pan when you start cooking.

Step 5:

The Burner

The burner unit holds the methylated spirits as they burn.

This one has an adjustable lid so you can tailor the heat level.

Take the lid off the brass burner unit and pour in some methylated spirits. Put the lid back on the methylated spirits immediately, and put out of harms way.

Now carefully place the burner in the centre of the wind shield. Put the second windshield in place.

Step 6:

Light

Light a match, and drop it into the burner. As it is methylated sprits, you won't be able to see the flames. When you can feel heat, you'll know that it's lit.

Never touch the hot metal of the burner while cooking.

Step 7:

Pan

Use the handle to place the pan on the metal supports inside the wind shield.

Step 8:

Frying Pan

If you want to use the frying pan, use the detachable handle to lift the hooks, then sit the frying pan over the heat. Use this detachable handle to lift the pan off the wind shield.

Step 9:

Cook

You can now use the stove to boil water, or heat food in the pan or frying pan.

Step 10:

Flame adjuster

If you think the flame is burning too high use the adjustable burner top to control it. Always use the handle attachment when putting this in place.

Step 11:

More Safety Tips

Never leave the stove unattended while it is burning. Do not leave it on for longer than necessary and under no circumstances should you use a stove to provide heat. The gas will eventually burn away and, although there may not be enough to ignite a flame, it will produce dangerous fumes that can fill a tent.

To turn the stove off once you have finished cooking, put the closed burner top in place. The lack of oxygen will cause the methylated spirits to stop burning after just a few seconds. Remove the burner top to make sure the fire has extinguished. Leave the trangia to cool before packing it away.
Yum. It always tastes better outdoors.

One of the best Outdoor cookers in the world. TIP: Add water to the fuel you are using to stop the pans being sooted up at the bottom, causing extra cleaning work.!! For 1 litre of fuel add 1/4 of water to the bottle. Example: 3/4 Fuel + 1/4 of water and bobs your uncle.

This is a very dangerous video clip and people could be very seriously hurt by it's failings! Besides the "bad practise," of leaving spent firewood (Matches) in a burner and using matches when a more appropriate lighter is available, the worrying thing about this video is that it appears to be a comprehensive guide to how to use a Trangia and yet simply misses out the NO1 safety rule! Trangias are very dangerous when it comes to re-filling, firstly Mentholated spirits (Meths) for use with a Trangia should always, without exception, be stored in a correctly labelled, plastic fuel bottle with a one-way filler valve top. The glass bottle here depicted is tantamount to manslaughter in terms of good practise! Firstly you have the danger of a broken glass bottle leaking Meths. Secondly you have the worry of the label becoming unreadable or even the Meths itself staining the label clean, thus leaving the poisonous liquid un-labelled! However the real worry here that there is no instruction whatsoever about how to re-fill the burner. Meths will burn with an almost invisible flame, as such it should be constantly reminded that the Meths burner should never, ever, ever, ever be re-filled unless the burner has been thoroughly smothered (by means of the supplied – fully closed - “flame adjuster” and not the burner lid which has an integral rubber seal to prevent spillage of unused Meths when the burner is packed away.) allowed to cool and then re-filled. Even a hot burner that has been extinguished can re-ignite when fresh Meths is poured onto it. If this happens and you’re using anything other than a correct safety bottle with a cut off valve then it will explode in your face, leave you disfigured and probably blind you. Even using the correct bottle and safety filler you still stand the chance of flash back and serious burns if the burner isn’t correctly cooled! I do not mean to either scare people or scaremonger here, this is a great bit of kit when used correctly, but anything that so closely resembles a training video should be correct and safe! This is a dangerous video, I have personally seen accidents with Trangias caused by this kind of lack of instruction and those one or two young people who have been so seriously maimed should serve as a lesson for all users.

Fuel - Rather than Meths use Alcool A Bruler 90*, availabe from all big French super-markets, found in amongst the White Spirit etc. Its the same as Meths without the smell but is about 60p a litre rather than over £3 for meths. Burner - I always burn off any remainder as if the Meths leaks out when packed it taints the pans and the next food cooked. Pans - try leaving the bottoms black. It absorbs the heat quicker, also saves trying to clean that bit.

Remember to be at least 6 metres away from nearest tent and never try to add fuel to a burner unless cold. Fuels should be kept and dispensed from the new Trangia safety bottle.

methylated spirits I beliieve refers to wood alcohol or ethanol to which an additive has made it undrinkable. Isopropyl (90% or better) should work fine, too.

This is all very helpful, but what I want to know is what is "metholated spirits" in French/Spanish/Italian... I have tried cooking on some very dubious fuels as a result of guessing in the hypermarche/mercado etc
