Skin Rashes
What is a 'skin rash'?
A skin rash is any inflammatory condition in the skin. That leads to a visual change in the way the skin appears.
What is 'dermatitis'?
Dermatitis is an inflammatory condition of the skin. It is a non-specific term for any inflammation in the skin.
What are the most common types of skin rash?
Yes, the most common types of rashes are either red and round and scaly, or sometimes they can be non-scaly. Sometimes they can be in the form or wheels or hives, and sometimes they can be folliculer based which are bumpy and can be red as well.
Do rashes ever indicate a life-threatening condition?
Some rashes can indicate a life-threatening condition. They are sometimes an internal infection, or an internal malignancy, that can show itself in the skin and your dermatologist, or your skin doctor can make a diagnosis that can lead to an underlying condition that can be internal.
How do I know if my rash is a flesh eating bacteria or not?
The flesh-eating bacteria can start as a rash or a redness in the skin, but that changes quickly and rapidly and continues to expand. Patients often get sick and the skin breaks down and can ulcerate. But the key to that infection is the expanding nature of the redness. It continues, it's very quick, it can be painful, and the patient often has systemic or generalized symptoms such as fevers, chills, nausea or vomiting.
When should I see a doctor about a skin rash?
You should see your doctor about a skin rash for several reasons. First of all, if you don't feel well generally, or if you feel sick, you should see your doctor. If a rash is expanding or changing rapidly, you should also see your doctor. And simply enough, if you have a rash that you've tried to treat with a topical medicine or an oral antihistamine and it doesn't seem to act like it should to you and go away, you should see your doctor sooner rather than later.
